What Gets Cleaned

A real cleaning covers every component that collects dust, carbon, and debris — not just a quick wipe-down of the glass. Here's what we go through on every visit.

Burner & Ports

Spider webs and debris clog burner ports and cause uneven or yellow flames — it's one of the most common things we see. Carbon deposits build up inside and around the ports over time, restricting the gas flow that controls your flame pattern. We clear every port with the right tools and remove the carbon buildup so your flame burns clean and even across the full burner.

Glass Panel

Combustion byproducts leave mineral deposits on the inside of the glass — that's the white haze most homeowners notice over time. It's not permanent damage, but you do need the right products to remove it safely. We don't use household glass cleaner; it damages the high-temp ceramic coating on fireplace glass. We use ceramic-safe products that clear the haze without etching the surface.

Artificial Logs & Media

Dust and fine debris build up on ceramic logs, decorative stones, and glass media whether the fireplace is running or just sitting idle. That buildup affects how the flame plays across the firebox and can create hot spots on media that wasn't meant to take direct flame contact. We clean and reposition logs to manufacturer spec so the flame pattern looks right and the media stays undamaged.

Pilot Assembly

The pilot assembly is one of the most neglected parts of a gas fireplace — and one of the most important. Carbon builds up on the pilot orifice and thermocouple tip over time, cutting down on ignition reliability and causing those annoying no-start situations. We clean both carefully. The assembly is delicate, and cleaning it the wrong way can knock components out of alignment and turn a dirty pilot into a broken one.

Firebox Interior

Even in a sealed gas fireplace, dust and debris find their way inside over months and years. Fine particulates settle on the walls and floor of the firebox, and when the unit runs they burn off and add to the haze you see building up on the glass. We vacuum and wipe down the interior so the firebox is clean heading into the heating season.

Accessible Venting

Dust builds up on venting components near the firebox, and debris or pest activity can create blockages in the accessible sections of the vent run. We check the accessible venting for buildup and obstructions, clear what we can reach, and flag anything further up the system that needs a closer look.

Why DIY Cleaning Often Makes It Worse

Most gas fireplace cleaning products at the hardware store are wrong for the job. A few minutes with the wrong product or technique can cause damage that no professional cleaning will undo.

Wrong Products Etch the Glass

Standard glass cleaners and ammonia-based sprays chemically react with the ceramic coating on fireplace glass. You end up with permanent etching that can't be cleaned out — the glass has to be replaced.

Burner Port Cleaning Requires Disassembly

To clean the burner ports properly, the burner has to come out. Trying to clean them in place with a brush or compressed air usually just pushes debris further into the ports instead of clearing them.

Pilot Assembly Cleaning Can Misalign Components

The thermocouple, pilot orifice, and igniter all sit within precise tolerances. If you don't know what you're touching, cleaning it can knock something out of alignment and turn a dirty pilot into a non-functional one.

Why Gas Fireplaces Still Need Cleaning

A lot of homeowners assume gas fireplaces don't need cleaning because gas burns cleanly. That's partly true — but it misses the bigger picture.

Gas combustion doesn't produce creosote the way wood does, but it does produce carbon deposits over time. And the fireplace sits in your living space year-round: dust, pet hair, and spider webs collect inside the firebox, on the burner, inside the ports, and around the pilot assembly — regardless of what fuels it.

That accumulation affects three things:

Frequently Asked Questions

Do gas fireplaces need to be cleaned?

They do. Gas burns cleaner than wood, but dust, pet hair, spider webs, and carbon still build up on burners, ports, and logs over time. Left alone, that buildup hurts flame quality, efficiency, and ignition reliability — and shortens the life of components like the pilot assembly and thermocouple. Annual cleaning is the simplest thing you can do to keep a gas fireplace running reliably.

What gets cleaned in a gas fireplace cleaning?

We go through the burner and ports, artificial logs or media, glass panel, firebox interior, pilot assembly, and accessible venting. Each area takes a different approach — the right products and tools for each one. The pilot assembly and burner ports specifically need to come apart to clean properly, which is why a professional cleaning gets results that surface-level DIY work doesn't.

How often should I have my gas fireplace cleaned?

Once a year is the standard baseline. If you're running the fireplace heavily through the heating season, or you've got pets that shed a lot, more frequent cleaning may make sense. We'll tell you what we find during the visit and give you an honest recommendation based on what we're actually looking at — not a generic schedule.

My glass is cloudy or hazy — can you fix that?

In most cases, yes. White haze on gas fireplace glass is usually mineral deposits from combustion byproducts — not scratches, not permanent damage. We clean it with non-abrasive products made for high-temperature ceramic glass, and the glass usually comes out looking like new. The key is using the right product: standard glass cleaners etch the ceramic coating and make the damage permanent. That's why this isn't a job for household supplies.

Is gas fireplace cleaning included in a tune-up?

Yes — cleaning is included in our standard tune-up service. If you'd rather just have a standalone cleaning without the full inspection and component testing, we offer that too. Not sure which makes sense for you? Give us a call. We'll help you figure it out based on when the unit was last serviced and what, if anything, you're noticing.

Can dirty burners cause yellow flames?

Dirty burners are actually one of the most common reasons for yellow flames. Clogged ports restrict gas flow and cause incomplete combustion — what you see is yellow or orange instead of blue. A properly burning gas flame should be mostly blue with small yellow tips. Solid yellow flames mean something's interfering with combustion. Cleaning the burner and clearing the ports usually fixes it, though yellow flames can also point to a venting or air supply issue worth ruling out while we're there.
